1905, with -ic + medical Latin noun anaphylaxis "exaggerated susceptibility," from French anaphylaxie (1902), from Greek ana- (see ana-) + phylaxis "watching, guarding" (cf. prophylactic). Anaphylactic shock is attested by 1916.
