Sweden

c.1600, originally in Scottish (Swethin, Swadne, etc.), from Middle Dutch Sweden, probably a dative plural of Swede (earlier in English Sweden was used of the people and Swedeland of the country). In Old English, the country was Sweoland or Sweorice (cf. Old Norse sviariki, source of Swedish Sverige). Ultimately named for the original inhabitants (see Swede).
